Here is a really good article about how to best get into SOF these days. I actually had the opportunity to talk to Operator Goggins who gave me a lot of good info in regards to how the teams are run now and the physical fitness required to complete such arduous tasks. Some good stuff.

I heard an interesting tidbit about the SEALs in regards to Iraq yesterday from a friends brother home on mid-tour leave. From what he's seen, SEALs over there do alot of walking around the FOB with their handlebar mustaches while the actual heavy lifting is being done by Green Berets and Marines. Though their recruiting idea is a novel one and an interesting idea.
Ya, I've hear that they're not doing too much other than snatch and grabs and VIP and base protection. They're specialty isn't FID so it makes since to see the ODA's doing a bit more. I've hear Afghanistan is a different story though.

I do know that during the Gulf War the SEALs cruised up and down the Iraqi coast firing their Heavy Machine Guns before we invaded to act as the diversion so the Iraqi's would think we were coming from the sea while we actually came from the Land.
In the current conflicts their maritime capability is pretty limited except in the initial invasion with the takedown of KAAOT and MABOT.
