i can usually fiddle with it to lock the mag in place, but it seems to take 2-4 rounds to do get it there

maybe the mag has side to side play along with a worn mag cach...

If you end up having to buy a new gun go with TM. Lots of parts to replace broken ones [at least at AEX] and I have yet to run into any issues with mine. I've probably put around 2000+ rounds through it.

Wow, that is a new one for me (with a KWA). I know the newer full metal versions fit very tightly so I tend to load the magazine with the slide locked back, but that was because it would lock the follower down otherwise.
